Toto Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
Paver driveway installation in San Francisco typically runs $8,260 to $21,240, and if a section of your Toto driveway has settled, cracked, or shifted, we can usually get it torn out, re-based, and re-laid within one to two weeks once materials are confirmed. Most San Francisco owners discover the failure the same way: a paver tips underfoot after a rainy week, a low spot holds water against the garage, or tree roots from a neighbor’s mature ficus finally won the argument with the base layer. We stock Toto-compatible pavers and the matching joint sand, and we write you a fixed price before any work begins.

Before we go further: Elmstead Remodeling San Francisco is an independent remodeling and paving contractor. We are not affiliated with Toto, and we don’t represent ourselves as a factory branch. What we do is match, price, and install their products correctly, with the Cedarwell Care Promise behind the crew.
Which Toto Models This Applies To

Toto manufactures paver lines in modular sizes that interlock, and the most common San Francisco installations we see use their 60mm and 80mm thick pavers in 4×8, 8×8, and a small number of 12×12 formats. The 60mm units are rated for pedestrian and light-vehicle use; on driveways where the family parks an SUV or a contractor’s van, the 80mm thickness is the correct call and the difference in material cost is roughly $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot, not thousands.
The compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Toto driveway pavers rely on a specific joint width, generally 1/8 to 3/16 inch, and they are designed to lock with fine-grit bedding sand, not the coarse concrete sand some paver suppliers hand out by default. Using the wrong sand changes how the pavers seat, and you will notice it as a subtle rocking underfoot within the first year. Ask whoever installed the original driveway what sand they used; if the answer is vague, we verify on site before we order replacement units.
For most San Francisco driveways, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a manufacturer like Belgard or Calstone will match Toto’s dimensions and often carry a similar transferable warranty. If the paver color has been discontinued, aftermarket matching is your only path short of redoing the entire driveway. We will show you both options, with line item prices, and let you choose.

Signs Your Toto Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Rocking or tipping pavers underfoot. This usually means the bedding sand has washed out or compacted unevenly. In San Francisco’s wet winters, a single clogged downspout draining onto the driveway can undermine a 20-square-foot section in one season.
- Water pooling in the same spot after rain. A low spot means the base layer has settled unevenly. Patching the surface won’t fix it; the pavers in that section need to come up so we can re-grade the base and compact it properly.
- Cracks running across multiple pavers. This points to a failing base or a heavy point load, like a car parked on the same two pavers for years. Cracked pavers can be swapped individually if we can match them; the base underneath still needs to be checked.
- Weeds or ants pushing up between joints. The joint sand has failed and been replaced by organic matter. In San Francisco’s climate, this accelerates quickly. The sand needs to be removed and fresh polymeric or fine-grit joint sand reinstalled.
- Pavers sinking near the garage apron or along the side lot line. This is almost always a drainage issue or tree-root pressure. We address the water first, then rebuild the section, because re-laying pavers over an unsolved drainage problem means you’ll be calling us again in two years.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Francisco, a section repair on a Toto paver driveway, where we remove, re-base, and re-lay an area up to about 200 square feet, typically falls between $2,000 and $5,500 depending on base damage and access. A full paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240. Driveway replacement, where the old surface comes out entirely and new base, pavers, and edging go in, sits between $5,900 and $16,520.
What drives the price: how much of the original base is still structurally sound, whether we can match existing pavers or need to blend a new color, fence-line access for the compactor, and whether the job is in a flat Sunset District lot or a steep Noe Valley grade. Every quote is written line by line before work starts. The labor, materials, haul-off, and clean-up are in the number. You will not get a change order because the crew found “surprises,” unless the surprise is a buried gas line, in which case we stop, call PG&E, and walk you through it before another dollar is spent.
Our work on paver driveways and patios is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it settles, shifts, or fails within a year, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing driveway pavers is not high-tension work like a garage spring or electrical panel, and a homeowner with a rubber mallet and some patience can re-seat a single drifting paver. What gets expensive is guessing wrong about the base. If a paver is rocking because the base washed out, putting sand on top and tapping it down is cosmetic; it will fail again.
Here’s what you can safely check yourself: walk the driveway after a rain and mark every spot that holds water with chalk or painter’s tape. Pull up one loose paver near the failure, look at the sand and base under it, and take a photo. That photo actually helps us quote the job before we visit. What you should not do is rent a plate compactor and rebuild the base on a sloped San Francisco driveway without understanding drainage grading. We have corrected enough DIY base failures to say this plainly: the material is not the expensive part, it’s knowing what’s underneath.
If you want a pair of trained eyes on it instead, call (831) 480-4497. We’ll come look, tell you what’s actually wrong, and put the fix in writing.
FAQs

With a properly compacted base and correct joint sand, Toto driveway pavers in San Francisco usually last 25 to 30 years before the base needs meaningful work. The pavers themselves hold up well; what fails here is the base and drainage over time. Call (831) 480-4497 and we’ll come inspect yours and tell you honestly how much life is left.
Yes, most San Francisco driveways can be section-repaired rather than fully replaced, as long as the pavers can be matched and the base only failed in isolated areas. We quote section repairs on their own so you are not pushed into a full replacement you don’t need. That said, if half the driveway is failing, redoing the whole thing is often cheaper per square foot.
Most Toto driveway section repairs in San Francisco are done in two to five working days, including base re-compaction, re-laying the pavers, re-sanding joints, and clean-up. Rain adds a day or two because compacting wet base traps problems for later. We’ll give you a schedule in writing before the crew arrives.
We keep the most common Toto-compatible 60mm and 80mm pavers on hand in grey, charcoal, and tan; less common colors or sizes get ordered from our Bay Area paver supplier, typically a two-to-five-day lead time in San Francisco. We’ll confirm availability before we schedule the work, so you’re never left with a torn-up driveway waiting on a truck.
