Grohe Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

Grohe driveway and pavers replacement in San Francisco typically runs $5,310 – $14,160 for a concrete driveway and $8,260 – $21,240 for paver installation, depending on square footage, subgrade condition, and access to the site. We match the right Grohe-compatible paver profile and driveway finish to your existing hardscape, give you a written price before any tools come off the truck, and handle the removal, base prep, install, and clean-up in one sequence. Most San Francisco homeowners call us after winter rains expose a settled paver edge, a cracked driveway slab, or a drain line that no longer carries water away from the house.

Which Grohe Models This Applies To

Grohe doesn’t manufacture driveway pavers the way it makes faucets and shower valves – the Grohe name on a paver or driveway product usually runs through their building materials division, and the spec sheet matters more than the brand stamp. What we see most often in San Francisco homes are Grohe-spec channel drains, paver grid systems, and permeable paver bases that were installed with the original driveway and now need matching replacement pieces. If you still have the original installation paperwork, the product code starts with a “GR” prefix followed by a six-digit number. If the paperwork is long gone (which is most of the time), we measure the existing paver thickness and the joint width on site – San Francisco paver jobs from the last fifteen years usually run 60mm or 80mm pavers over a compacted aggregate base, and matching the metric thickness matters more than the manufacturer name on the underside. For OEM Grohe paver components, we order direct from Grohe’s building products distribution network. For the surrounding field pavers and edge restraints, quality aftermarket equivalents from the same quarry or mold series often save you 15 – 25% with no visible difference once the job is sealed. Elmstead Remodeling San Francisco is an independent contractor, not a Grohe factory service center – we tell you that up front so there’s no confusion about who’s standing behind the work.

Signs Your Grohe Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Water pooling against the foundation or garage slab. San Francisco’s rainy season exposes a failed paver base quickly – if the original install was sand-set without enough aggregate depth, the pavers sink in the wettest months and water runs toward the house instead of into the drain. This is usually a base failure, not a paver failure.
  • One edge of the driveway dropping below the curb line. We see this on hillside lots from the Sunset to Twin Peaks. The subgrade was never compacted properly, and the outer edge is slowly rotating outward. If you catch it early, we can re-set the edge restraint and recompact. If you wait, the whole section comes out.
  • Cracked pavers in a straight line across the driveway. A single straight crack usually traces to a buried utility trench that was backfilled and never recompacted. The pavers themselves didn’t fail – the ground under them moved. This tells us the repair has to go deeper than just popping in new pavers.
  • Efflorescence or white residue on the paver surface that won’t wash off. That’s mineral salts wicking up from underneath, which means water is moving through the base incorrectly. It’s not cosmetic – it’s a drainage warning. If left alone, the moisture cycle keeps breaking down the base and the pavers will start rocking underfoot.
  • Rocking or rattling pavers when you walk or drive over them. Loose pavers chip at the edges and crack faster. More importantly, a rocking paver means the sand joint has blown out, which lets more water get underneath, which accelerates the failure. One rocking paver in March becomes a six-foot sunken section by the following January.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard San Francisco driveway replacement, expect $5,900 – $16,520 depending on whether you are pulling concrete or re-setting pavers, how many square feet are involved, and what the subgrade looks like once we open it up. Paver driveway installation in San Francisco runs $8,260 – $21,240, and paver patio installation falls between $4,130 – $12,980. The range comes down to three things: the size of the area being redone, the depth of base material we need to add or replace, and whether the old driveway needs full removal or can be capped. Every written price from us includes the same line items: demolition and haul-off of the old surface, base compaction to spec, the Grohe-spec or matching paver material itself, joint sand, edge restraint, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. You get that written price before any work starts – not after the excavation reveals “unexpected conditions.” If we find something under the old driveway that changes the plan, we stop and explain the price before we touch it. Graham Stein has been writing out every cost before a single tool touches the floor for the better part of three decades, and that habit applies to driveways exactly the way it does to a bathroom in the Richmond District.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check a few things: whether the low spot is at the edge or the middle, whether the joints are filled with sand or blown out, and whether the drain channel is clear of leaves and debris. Those are observations, not repairs, and they tell us a lot before we show up. Where DIY goes wrong is the base. Replacing the surface pavers without fixing the underlying compaction or drainage means you’re redoing the job in two years – and in San Francisco’s wet winter/dry summer cycle, that base moves more than it would in, say, Sacramento. The other thing we won’t let you do alone is mix and match pavers from an old job: if the color lot doesn’t match, the patch looks worse than the original crack. For anything beyond a visual check or cleaning an exposed channel drain, call (831) 480-4497 and let us walk the site. Tell me what the room needs to do, and we’ll figure out the rest from there – except in this case, the room is your driveway, and what it needs to do is shed water and hold cars.
