IKO Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

If you have an IKO driveway or paver system in San Francisco and a section has cracked, sunk, or begun separating at the joints, we can match the replacement units and install them correctly. A typical IKO-compatible paver repair or partial driveway replacement in San Francisco runs $4,130 to $21,240 depending on square footage, base condition, and access. Most owners discover the problem the same way: water pools where it didn’t before, a wheel catches on a lifted edge, or tree roots have pushed a run of pavers out of plane. Those are the calls we take most often, and they’re usually fixable without tearing out the entire driveway.

We’re an independent remodeling and exterior contractor based in San Francisco. We are not affiliated with IKO as a manufacturer, but we work with IKO-compatible pavers and driveway systems regularly, and we stock common replacement profiles on our trucks. We also carry complementary material lines from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for interior projects, but the work on this page is specifically IKO driveway and paver matching, repair, and replacement.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

The compatibility question matters more with pavers than with most driveway materials, because IKO units are produced in specific dimensional series. If you know the paver’s face dimensions, thickness, and edge profile, we can almost always identify the series from a photo or a single sample unit. The most common IKO-compatible installations we see in San Francisco are interlocking concrete pavers in 60mm and 80mm thicknesses, with the 80mm units specified for driveways that carry passenger vehicles and the 60mm units reserved for walkways, patios, and paver accents. Using a 60mm unit in a driveway is a mistake we correct regularly, because San Francisco’s wet winters soften the sub-base and the thinner units crack under vehicle weight.

There is also the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision. For IKO paver systems, a quality aftermarket unit made to the same dimensional spec and color family will typically cost 15% to 30% less than an OEM-matched unit, and for older installations, an exact OEM color match may no longer be manufactured at all. The honest answer: we do not pressure owners toward OEM when a good aftermarket match is available. The honest caveat: color drift is real, especially with pavers that have aged in San Francisco fog and sun for a decade. A new unit placed next to a weathered one will look newer. We can blend that with cleaning and sealing, but no replacement unit will disappear into a 15-year-old field overnight.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Localized sinking or a low spot that holds water after rain. This is almost always a base failure underneath the pavers, not a paver failure. San Francisco’s clay-heavy soil expands and contracts through wet and dry cycles, and if the original install skimped on the aggregate base, the pavers migrate downward over time. The fix is lifting the affected area, re-compacting the base, and re-laying the units.
  • Joint sand washing out between pavers. When the spaces between units begin to empty, the pavers lose lateral support and start shifting against one another. You’ll see the sand pile up after rain or collect in the gutter. If left alone, the pavers next begin to rock and chip at the edges.
  • Visible cracking through multiple pavers in a line. A single cracked paver can be a manufacturing defect or a point impact. A line of cracks running across several units usually means the sub-base below has a soft seam, or a tree root is growing along the same path. Replacing the pavers without addressing what’s underneath means the new ones crack within two seasons.
  • Edges migrating outward or the border course separating. Without a proper edge restraint, driveway pavers spread under vehicle load like a deck of cards on a slight tilt. The border units drift toward the lawn or sidewalk, and the field units follow. This is very common on San Francisco hillside driveways, where gravity is working against the install every day.
  • A paver that rocks or sounds hollow when you step on it. That click you hear is the paver tapping against an uneven bed beneath it. It means the bedding layer has eroded or compacted unevenly. The paver itself may be perfectly fine; it’s the bed that failed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Francisco, a partial IKO paver driveway repair where we lift, re-base, and re-lay an area up to roughly 200 square feet typically lands between $4,130 and $8,260. A full driveway replacement with IKO-compatible pavers runs $5,900 to $21,240 depending on total square footage, demolition of the existing surface, base depth required, and access for equipment. Steep San Francisco driveways add cost, because we’re working on grade and hauling material accordingly.

Every quote is a written, line-item price before any work begins. That number includes the pavers, base material, joint sand, edge restraint, labor, and clean-up. It does not change after the crew arrives unless you ask us to add scope. We pull permits where San Francisco requires them and we stand behind the finished work with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the replacement isn’t done right, we make it right. That’s stamped on every project, not buried in a contract rider.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnosis: mark where water pools, photograph the cracked units, measure the paver dimensions, and note which way the driveway slopes. That information is genuinely useful, and it makes the first phone call faster. The repair itself is where DIY goes sideways. Lifting driveway pavers means compacting a base to the right density, setting a bedding layer at the correct depth, and re-establishing proper slope for drainage. Get any of that wrong, and you’ve traded a low spot for a different low spot, plus a stack of pavers you now have to move twice.

There’s also a practical issue: driveway pavers are heavy. A single 80mm paver can weigh 40 to 50 pounds. A repair area of just ten square feet is a few hundred pounds of material to lift, re-bed, and re-set, and our crews do it with plate compactors and laser levels, not a rubber mallet and hope. If you want to try the smaller walkway, we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s within reach. If it’s the driveway, call us at (831) 480-4497 and we’ll give you a written price. Estimates are free.
