Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

If you’re looking for a Tamko driveway or pavers specialist in San Francisco, you’re likely dealing with cracked pavers, a sinking section, or base failure that’s letting water pool where it shouldn’t. We install and repair Tamko-compatible paver driveways and patio systems throughout San Francisco, with typical installed pricing from $8,260 to $21,240 depending on square footage, base condition, and drainage work. Most paver repairs we handle are diagnosed and quoted within a single visit, and we carry common replacement pavers and edge restraints on our trucks so smaller fixes don’t drag across multiple trips. If your pavers are shifting, cracking, or the sand joints keep washing out, the problem is almost never the paver itself. It’s the base underneath. Every San Francisco paver driveway we’ve repaired in neighborhoods from the Sunset to Bernal Heights has failed for one of three reasons: a too-thin base, poor drainage, or missing edge restraint. Fix that, and the pavers above stay put.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s paver and driveway products fall into a few distinct lines: interlocking concrete pavers, permeable pavers, and the asphalt-based driveway surfacing they’re better known for. The compatibility question matters more than most homeowners expect. Tamko interlocking pavers follow standard dimensional sizing, 60mm and 80mm thicknesses for residential driveways, which means a quality aftermarket paver with the same dimensions and a matching chamfer will typically set level with the original. But the catch is color batch variation. A paver bought today will not match pavers laid in 2019, even from the same manufacturer. That fading and batch difference is why we always recommend keeping spare pavers from the original installation when you can, and why we photograph and measure everything during the estimate so replacements blend as cleanly as possible. We are an independent San Francisco installer, not affiliated with Tamko, which means we can source genuine Tamko or match with equivalent OEM-spec pavers from brands like Unilock or Belgard, whichever gets your driveway closest to its original look. For Tamko’s asphalt driveway products, the repair conversation is different: it’s about proper cold patch versus full resurface, and whether the underlying aggregate base is still doing its job.

Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sinking or depressed sections. This is base failure, not paver failure. In San Francisco’s clay-heavy soils, a poorly compacted base settles unevenly and the pavers follow it down. The fix is lifting the section, recompacting, and relaying, not just adding more sand.
  • Sand joints washing out after every rain. Normal paver sand hardens and locks within weeks. If the joints keep emptying, the base is holding water and pushing sand up, or you’re missing edge restraint at a low corner. We fix both by improving drainage and securely pinning the perimeter.
  • Cracked or chipped pavers in the wheel path. Cars and the occasional delivery truck concentrate weight along the driveway’s center line. If pavers crack there, they were likely 60mm units where 80mm should have been installed, or the base flexes under load. We see this regularly on older San Francisco driveways built before current load standards.
  • Weeds and grass sprouting through joints. Joints that host weeds mean organic material and moisture are getting in, which means the sand is gone and the pavers are shifting against each other. Pulling the weeds is cosmetic; the real fix is cleaning and resanding, then sealing if the homeowner wants lower maintenance.
  • Pooling water after rain. A properly graded paver driveway sheds water within an hour of the rain stopping. If water stands, the grade has flattened over time, often from edge settlement. This is one of the most common parkway repairs we handle in the Richmond and Sunset districts, where fog and winter rain test drainage more than any other part of San Francisco.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

In San Francisco, a full Tamko-compatible paver driveway replacement runs $8,260 to $21,240. A focused repair, like replacing 40 to 60 pavers and resanding the surface, typically lands between $1,200 and $3,800, depending on the base work required. Here’s how the numbers break down:

  • Paver driveway installation (new): $8,260 – $21,240
  • Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980
  • Paver section repair (base fix and relay): $1,200 – $3,800
  • Edge restraint repair (per linear foot): $18 – $35
  • Joint resanding and surface cleaning: $600 – $1,800

The range comes down to three things: how much of the base needs rebuilding, whether drainage pipe or a channel drain has to be added, and access. A narrow Noe Valley driveway with no rear access costs more in labor than an open front yard in the Outer Sunset, because every wheelbarrow of material moves farther. Every written price we give includes materials, labor, base work, and cleanup before work starts. If the scope grows during the job, you see the change in writing before we touch it.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things an owner can safely do. Remove debris from the joints, use a leaf blower to clear the surface, and note where water pools after a rain. Replacing one or two cracked pavers is manageable if you have spares, a flat bar, and patience. What we’d say not to DIY is any repair that involves the base. Once pavers come up and you’re into compacted aggregate, the tools change: plate compactors, laser levels, proper pit gravel, and geotextile fabric. Doing that wrong means the driveway fails again in eighteen months, and San Francisco’s winter rains will expose it quickly. If the failure is in a load-bearing area or near a property line retaining wall, we’d rather you call us before the digging starts. You can reach us at (831) 480-4497 to talk through what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you honestly whether a service call is even needed.
