CWS Bathroom Remodeling: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

If you own a CWS bathroom product and a component has failed or is wearing out, we can help. A CWS bathroom remodeling or part replacement in San Francisco typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, and most CWS-specific repairs or swaps are completed within a day or two once the replacement part is in hand. Owners usually notice the problem as a steady drip at a fitting, a fixture that no longer seals, or a cabinet drawer or door that no longer sits square.

We’re Elmstead Remodeling San Francisco, a Cedarwell company. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with CWS, but we have installed and repaired enough CWS bathroom components across San Francisco to know the common failure points and the right way to match parts. We also stock and install components from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when the job calls for an adjacent replacement.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

Most CWS bathroom components we see in San Francisco are either mid-2000s builder-grade installations or newer direct-to-owner purchases from the last five or six years. The compatibility question usually comes down to two things: the valve body size behind the wall and the mounting pattern on the cabinet hardware or vanity. If you can open the cabinet door and read the label on the underside of the shelf, that stamp and the date code are the fastest way for us to identify the exact part. For faucets and shower trims, pull the handle and read the engraving on the cartridge or the trim ring.

Here’s the gotcha San Francisco owners run into: CWS faucets made before 2014 tend to use a different cartridge retaining pattern than the current production runs, so the “same model” trim sometimes will not drop onto an older valve. We check this before we ever order the part. On cabinets and vanities, the hinge and drawer guide style changed around 2018, and matching the soft-close mechanism requires reading the number off the clip, not just the cabinet line name.

For most CWS parts, a quality aftermarket equivalent works as well as OEM and costs 20 to 40 percent less, but there are exceptions. Internal shower cartridges and diverter stems are two places where we recommend staying with the OEM part simply because the aftermarket tolerance is sometimes off by a few thousandths of an inch and that shows up as a slow drip two months later. On cabinet hinges and door glides, the aftermarket equivalents from the better-known hardware brands are typically just as good.

Signs Your CWS Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Constant drip from the tub spout or shower head. This almost always points to a worn cartridge or a failing diverter gate. The fix is usually a cartridge swap, not a full valve replacement.
  • Handle that turns too far or feels gritty. The internal stops in the cartridge have worn, letting the stem rotate past its intended range. Left alone, this can damage the valve body itself.
  • Cabinet door that will no longer stay closed or closes too hard. The soft-close mechanism has lost tension. On CWS cabinets, this is often a small clip on the hinge, not the hinge arm itself.
  • Drawer that jumps the track or catches halfway. The roller or guide has flattened on one side. This is often misread as an installation problem when it is really just a spent nylon wheel.
  • Water staining at the base of the vanity or inside the cabinet base. The supply connection at the faucet body or the shutoff is seeping. By the time the wood swells, the leak has been active for a while.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A low-threshold walk-in shower with a bench and grab bar

A single CWS cartridge replacement or hinge rebuild in San Francisco usually falls between $470 and $1,100 including the part and the visit. A full tub-to-shower conversion or shower replacement on the CWS framing runs $4,130 to $14,160 installed, and a complete CWS bathroom remodel lands between $10,620 and $33,040 depending on whether we are keeping the same footprint, moving plumbing, or replacing the waterproofing system behind the tile. Every quote we give is a written price before any work starts, and that number does not change while we are in the house unless you ask us to add something that was not in the original scope.

What is included: the part, the labor to install it, any small fittings and supply lines needed, shoe covers on every trip in the house, drop cloths down before we open a wall, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every CWS part we install. If it is not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check yourself: read the label and date code off the cabinet or the trim ring so you know what you are working with, turn the supply stops on and off to confirm they still hold, and check for water in the cabinet base. Taking a photo of the part and the label saves a trip and a return visit. What we would not recommend: opening a shower valve behind tile, pulling a cartridge under pressure, or loosening any supply nut without shutting the water off at the manifold. The risk is not the part; it is the water. A valve that feels stuck can be corroded, and forcing it can turn a $600 repair into a wet wall and a full remodel. If there is any question, call us at (831) 480-4497 and describe what you see. We will tell you over the phone whether it is safe to attempt or worth scheduling a visit.
