Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

Ameristar driveway and paver parts in San Francisco typically cost between $295 and $21,240 installed, depending on whether you’re sealing an existing surface, replacing a failed section, or rebuilding the full driveway. We stock Ameristar-compatible pavers and the bedding, edge restraint, and joint materials that go with them, and our crews can usually have parts on site within a few business days. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver shifts underfoot after rain, a low spot holds water for days, or an edge row starts creeping into the lawn.

Before you assume the worst, know this: a failed paver driveway is rarely a failed paver. It’s usually the foundation, the edge, or the drainage. That’s where we start, and that’s what this guide is about.

Key Takeaways

  • Ameristar paver parts range from about $295 for sealing materials to $21,240 for a full paver driveway install in San Francisco.
  • Most paver “failures” trace back to the base, edge restraint, or slope, not the paver itself.
  • Graham Stein and the Elmstead team write out every cost before work starts, including the parts.

Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

Ameristar’s paver and driveway product line splits into two broad families: interlocking concrete pavers and segmental retaining wall block, with the pavers being the workhorse for San Francisco driveways, walkways, and patios. Within the paver family, you’ll see names tied to thickness and shape rather than model numbers, which is where owners get tripped up. A paver rated for pedestrian use is not rated for a driven surface. The difference is usually 60mm versus 80mm of product thickness, and on San Francisco’s hills, with the torque of a car turning on an incline, that extra 20mm matters more than it does on a flat lot in the East Bay.

How to identify what you have:

  • Check the paver’s thickness with a tape measure at an exposed edge. 80mm (about 3 1/8 inches) is the driveway-grade line.
  • Look for a manufacturer stamp on the underside of a loose paver. Ameristar stamps are often on the bottom face, not the top.
  • If the driveway is older than 10 years, assume the current product line has shifted slightly. Pigment batches shift over time, and a new paver next to a 12-year-old paver won’t match, even if it’s the same color name. We’ll tell you that before you order anything.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Ameristar pavers are the OEM product, and for driveway applications, we recommend staying with OEM or a named equivalent from a manufacturer whose warranty you can verify. The aftermarket “bargain” pavers we’ve pulled from San Francisco driveways tend to show chipped edges and faded color within three or four years. The savings rarely survive one serious rain season.

Elmstead Remodeling San Francisco is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Ameristar, and we don’t pretend to be. We stock and install their products because they’ve held up on the hills, not because of a badge.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Water pooling in low spots for more than 48 hours after rain. This points to a base or slope problem, not the pavers. In San Francisco’s wet winters, standing water works into the joints, softens the bedding sand, and starts a slow-moving failure.
  • Edge pavers drifting outward into the lawn or flower bed. The edge restraint has failed or was never installed properly. Without a solid edge, the whole field starts to spread, and you’ll see widening gaps within a year.
  • One or two pavers sitting visibly lower than the surrounding field. You’re looking at a localized base failure, often from a utility trench that was backfilled too loosely. The paver is fine; what’s under it gave way.
  • Joint sand washing out after every significant rain. In San Francisco’s heavier downpours, polymeric sand that wasn’t activated correctly or was swept into wet joints will erode. Once the joints go, pavers start shifting.
  • A powdery white film spreading across the surface (efflorescence). Moisture moving through the paver carries natural salts to the surface. It’s usually cosmetic, but on a driveway that means water is moving where it shouldn’t be, and the base may be holding more moisture than the design intended.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

For San Francisco homeowners, paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240 for a full project. If the failure is confined to a section, partial repairs typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000 depending on square footage, base condition, and how much of the existing paver you can reuse. Driveway sealing, which we do on Ameristar paver surfaces, ranges from $295 to $825.

What’s included in our quote: the pavers and bedding sand, edge restraint, joint sand, any base repair needed, haul-off of failed material, and a crew that puts down drop cloths along the path to the driveway and photographs the job before they leave. The written price you get is the price you pay. No surprises after the crew arrives, and that’s a promise we put on paper, not a line in a brochure.

A note on the range: San Francisco driveways on a slope with poor drainage or access that requires carrying material by hand will land at the higher end. A flat driveway with a sound base and easy access lands lower. Graham Stein has walked enough San Francisco driveways to know which one you have within the first five minutes, and he’ll price it accordingly, in writing, before anything is ordered.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can safely check yourself. Walk the driveway after rain and mark spots where water pools. Look at the edges and note where they’re drifting. That information helps us quote accurately, and it costs you nothing but a walk around the block.

What we’d ask you not to do is pull up failed pavers and reset them on fresh sand. If the base has failed, you’re putting a clean shirt on a problem that goes deeper, and you’ll be back out there in spring doing it again. Same with polymeric sand: the mixing and activation window is tighter than the bag suggests, and on a working driveway, a botched joint job means loose pavers by the next storm.

Also, if you’re on a steep San Francisco grade and you’re considering lifting a section of pavers to “just take a look,” stop there. A driven surface on an incline is carrying real load, and a section that shifts while you’re working under it isn’t worth the saved trip charge. Call (831) 480-4497. We’ll look at it with you, and the estimate is free.
