Plant Prefab Kitchen Remodeling: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

A full kitchen remodel on a Plant Prefab home in San Francisco typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 installed, and we carry the cabinetry, countertop, and fixture lines that fit Plant Prefab’s modular dimensions. Most owners call us after living with a kitchen that was never quite right from day one: a cabinet face that delaminated, a countertop seam that opened up, or drawers that stopped gliding the way they should. You’ll get a written price before any tool touches the floor, and the crew will leave the house the way we found it, floors covered and a photo of the clean-up before they go.

Which Plant Prefab Models This Applies To

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Plant Prefab builds kitchens into their LivingHomes and YB-series units using modular cabinet runs and panelized wall systems. What matters for a remodel is the cabinet depth and the width of the rough openings: Plant Prefab’s standard kitchen cabinetry runs closer to a 24-inch depth with a 3-inch scribe allowance, which is shallower than a stick-built San Francisco Victorian where frames vary by an inch or more from wall to wall. The key compatibility gotcha is the wall mounting system. Plant Prefab walls are engineered panels, not dimensional lumber, which means cabinet anchors and countertop supports must be placed on the panel’s structural grid rather than wherever a stud finder happens to beep. We identify your panel layout before we order anything, because a cabinet run hung off-grid will pull away from the wall within the first year.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Plant Prefab’s original kitchen components are good quality, but some of them came from suppliers that have since discontinued the line. We stock KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry as direct replacements, and Cambria or Silestone for counters, because their dimensional tolerances match the modular openings without gap-filling trim. You don’t have to hunt down an OEM part that no longer exists. We spec the aftermarket equivalent, and the manufacturer warranty travels with the finished project.

Signs Your Plant Prefab Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Drawer glides binding or sagging. The original glides on some Plant Prefab kitchens were light-duty side-mount tracks. After a few years of San Francisco humidity swings, the rollers wear flat and the drawer starts to hang. This is almost always a glide replacement, not a drawer problem.
  • Cabinet door hinges loosening repeatedly. The panelized walls mean hinge screws have fewer places to bite. If a door has been tightened more than twice, the screw hole is stripped inside the panel and needs a threaded insert, not another turn of the screwdriver.
  • Laminate edge banding peeling at the sink base. That cabinet takes the most moisture, and edge banding is the first thing to lift when the original seal wears down. It starts small at the dishwasher return and creeps along the toe kick by summer.
  • Countertop seam opening near the cooktop. Heat-cycling from the range causes solid-surface seams to expand and contract. A visible seam that catches a fingernail is a sign the adhesive has failed and water is getting underneath.
  • Soft-close mechanisms slamming shut. Most soft-close failures in factory-built kitchens are tired dampers inside the hinge cup or the drawer track. Replacing the damper is quick; replacing the whole cabinet is not usually necessary.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A small remodeled galley kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling

The installed price for a Plant Prefab kitchen remodel in San Francisco breaks down like this:

Scope Installed Price Range
Cabinet installation only $4,720 – $15,340
Countertop installation only $2,360 – $7,670
Backsplash installation $945 – $2,950
Kitchen island installation $3,540 – $11,800
Full kitchen remodel (cabinets, counters, fixtures, island) $16,520 – $53,100

The range moves with the square footage of the run, the countertop material, and whether we’re also relocating plumbing or electrical. A compact galley kitchen in a Sunset District flat sits at the lower end; a full LivingHome kitchen with an island and stone tops sits at the higher end. Every line item is written down before work starts. If the price is going to move, you’ll know why and you’ll approve it first. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the finished work: if something isn’t right after we leave, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There are honest things you can check yourself. Pull a drawer out and look at the glide model number. Note where the edge banding has lifted and tag it with painter’s tape. Check whether your soft-close failures are in the hinge or the track. Those notes save us a trip and save you time.

What we’d ask you not to do is remove wall-mounted cabinets on Plant Prefab’s panelized walls without knowing the anchor grid. The panels are not forgiving like wood studs, and one wrong pilot hole can compromise the mounting point. Same goes for lifting a stone or quartz countertop: 200 pounds of Cambria across a seam is a two-person job with suction cups, not a weekend morning with a pry bar. If you’ve got a failing kitchen component and want it matched and installed right, call (831) 480-4497 and tell us what the room needs to do. We’ll figure out the rest from there.
