Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

Barrette paver driveway replacement or repair in San Francisco typically runs $4,130–$21,240 installed, depending on square footage, base prep, and drainage work. We stock Barrette-compatible edging, joint sand, and replacement pavers on our trucks for most common profiles, so a spot repair on a single failed section usually happens same-visit. Most San Francisco homeowners discover the problem after winter rain: a paver sinks, an edge restraint lets go on a slope, or the joint sand washes out and the surface starts shifting under car tires.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette’s paver lines break into three families: concrete interlocking pavers (the Holland and tumbled profiles most driveways in San Francisco use), permeable pavers designed for the city’s drainage requirements, and the vinyl edging and spike system that pins the perimeter. Identifying the exact part matters if you’re buying replacement pieces yourself: check the back of a pulled paver for the mold number, and measure thickness before ordering. Barrette pavers run 60mm and 80mm for driveways; the 60mm is fine for foot traffic but we won’t install it under a car. For OEM vs aftermarket: Barrette’s own edging holds up better than generic big-box edging in soil that stays wet, which is most of San Francisco from November through March. We have seen generic steel spikes rust out in three seasons near the Sunset where fog keeps moisture in the bed year-round. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Barrette, so we’ll give you the honest read on whether a repair or a re-set makes more sense.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken pavers near the curb or gutter: Base material has washed away underneath, usually from runoff channeling under the edge. The pavers themselves are fine; what failed is the compacted base below.
  • Joint sand turning to mud or moss after rain: The polymeric sand has broken down. Water is getting into the seams and accelerating the freeze-thaw shift San Francisco’s clay soil likes to do.
  • Edge restraints pulling away at the driveway sides: The spike system has loosened, often where tree roots from a neighbor’s property push laterally. The driveway starts to spread at the edges, which is how cracks begin.
  • Paver wobble underfoot or when you drive over a section: One paver moves against another while the surrounding ones stay put. That’s a sign the base underneath has a void, not that the paver is cracked.
  • Efflorescence or chalky white staining in patches: Water is moving through the paver from below and depositing minerals at the surface. Aesthetically it’s cosmetic; structurally it’s telling you too much water is sitting under the driveway.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full paver driveway installation in San Francisco: $8,260–$21,240 for a standard single-car or two-car driveway, which includes excavation of the old surface, a compacted aggregate base, bedding sand, the Barrette pavers, edge restraint, and joint sand. Paver patio installation is $4,130–$12,980. Driveway replacement (remove and redo, if you’re pulling an old paver system) is $5,900–$16,520. What drives the range here is real: how bad the base has been chewed up by drainage, whether we need to haul off the old material, and how far the truck has to park from the site in the tighter streets around Noe Valley or the Richmond. Our written quote lands on your table before any work starts, with the part cost, labor, disposal, and materials listed separately. If the base is intact and you only need a re-set and new sand on a small section, the job lands closer to the low end. We stack the 365-Day Done Right Promise on any re-install: if the paver shifts after we leave, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a version of this job a careful homeowner can do, and a version that should not be done without a crew. You can safely pull a cracked paver, inspect the joint sand, and clean out debris with a flat tool. You should not try to re-compact a base, re-level a slope, or re-set edge restraints along a driveway that carries a car. That last one is where DIY goes badly in San Francisco: a section that looks fixed in July will sink again in January because the base was never the problem. Getting the base right means digging down 8–10 inches, running a plate compactor, and building back up in lifts. That is heavy work, and done wrong it simply delays the same failure. If you are not sure, call (831) 480-4497 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually looking at before a single tool leaves the truck.
