Silestone Home Additions & ADU: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

If you’re planning a home addition or ADU in San Francisco and want Silestone countertops, Elmstead Remodeling San Francisco installs them as part of the build. Our home additions run $53,100 – $153,400, and Silestone surfaces are quoted at $2,360 – $7,670 for countertop installation depending on square footage and edge profile. You’ll notice the need for this page when a Silestone seam opens, a corner chips near a high-traffic edge, or the slab on a peninsula starts to show wear years before you expected. We see all three across the city, and the fix is usually more straightforward than homeowners assume.

Most owners discover a failing Silestone surface the way they discover a slow drip under the sink: something small catches their eye, then they can’t unsee it. A hairline crack near the cooktop. A dull spot where the finish has worn through. A seam that used to sit flush and now catches a fingernail. San Francisco’s damp winters and dry summers cause the wooden cabinets underneath to shift, and that movement travels straight up into the stone. The result is a seam or edge that no longer sits the way it should. The good news is that Silestone is a quartz composite, which means it resists staining and scratching better than natural stone, and it’s repairable in many cases without a full slab replacement.

Which Silestone Models This Applies To

Silestone by Cosentino comes in several collections, and the version you have affects how we approach a repair or replacement. The Classic and Eternal series are the most common in San Francisco kitchens added in the last ten years, with slabs running 1.2 cm, 2 cm, or 3 cm thick. The 3 cm material is what we recommend for kitchen islands and perimeter counters in additions and ADUs, because it doesn’t require a plywood core and holds up better to San Francisco’s soil movement. The Le Chic and Urban Crush series carry a more textured finish, and those slabs are almost always 2 cm with a laminated edge.

To identify your Silestone product, check the underside of the slab near the sink cutout for a serial label printed by Cosentino. If the label is gone, a fabricator can usually match the color and series by taking a small sample from an inconspicuous area. We stock the most common Silestone colors on the shelf for small repairs, but a full slab for an ADU kitchen usually takes 7 – 14 days to arrive from fabrication. You do not need an OEM-logo replacement from a Silestone-only dealer. Elk Grove, Cambria, and several other fabricators produce quartz slabs with the same thickness and finish tolerances, and we work with Cambria and KraftMaid products regularly for full kitchen packages. What matters is the thickness, the color match, and the adhesive system used to bond the seam.

Signs Your Silestone Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • A seam that has opened wider than a credit card. The counter shifted as the cabinet box underneath settled. In San Francisco, the fog-belt neighborhoods see more of this because wood framing absorbs moisture in winter and shrinks in summer. The seam can often be re-bonded and polished flat.
  • A chip on the front edge or corner, usually near a sink or dishwasher. Dropped cast-iron cookware is the typical culprit. Silestone chips cleanly, and the repair is a color-matched resin fill that most homeowners can’t find after we’re done.
  • A dull, cloudy patch that never regains its shine. This is usually chemical etching from a cleaner that contained bleach or ammonia. Quartz doesn’t etch the way marble does, but repeated harsh cleaners break down the resin binder over time. The fix is re-polishing, not replacement.
  • A crack running from the sink cutout toward the front edge. This is the one sign we tell homeowners not to ignore. It means stress is concentrating at the weakest point of the slab, and San Francisco’s small but regular seismic shifts will keep working that crack wider. This is where a professional needs to look before it spreads.
  • Stains in the color veins that won’t lift. Silestone is non-porous, so this is uncommon. When we see it, the stain is typically sitting in a micro-scratch in the finish rather than in the stone itself, and a surface refinish clears it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

In San Francisco, countertop installation runs $2,360 – $7,670 depending on slab size, thickness, edge profile, and whether the sink is undermount or drop-in. For a home addition or ADU where Silestone is being installed as part of the whole build, the addition itself lands between $53,100 and $153,400, and the countertop line item falls inside that range. If you’re only replacing a damaged Silestone slab in an existing kitchen, the smaller countertop range applies.

Work San Francisco Installed Range
Home addition (full project) $53,100 – $153,400
ADU construction, including finishes $106,200 – $259,600
Countertop installation (Silestone, per surface) $2,360 – $7,670
Kitchen island installation $3,540 – $11,800

What drives the spread: slab size and whether your layout needs one seam or two, edge profile (eased, bevel, bullnose), and the condition of the cabinet boxes beneath. We give a written price before any work starts, so the countertop number is not a starting point it’s the number on the contract. Every project carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a seam opens or a fill fails within that year, we return and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do more than you think with a slab of Silestone. Cleaning with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap keeps the finish intact, and you can mark the seam movement with painter’s tape to see if it widens over a month. What you should not do is attempt to re-bond an open seam, re-polish a large dull patch, or fill a chip near an edge without the right quartz-specific adhesive. The resin systems we use are not the same products sold at hardware stores, and a failed DIY fill leaves a yellowed or raised repair that’s harder to fix the second time. If the crack runs from the sink, stop using that side of the counter and call us. We serve the Sunset District, the Richmond, Noe Valley, and neighborhoods throughout San Francisco. Call (831) 480-4497 and we’ll come look, measure, and write you a price.
